VulcanForms is currently seeking an Optical Engineer to join our Laser Optics Engineering team at our Burlington, MA facility.  In this role, your main objective will be to build and test high power beam delivery systems for the world’s most productive and advanced metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) systems.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Setting up and conducting hands-on experiments involving single-mode and multi-mode fiber lasers, fiber couplers and other optical/ opto-mechanical elements.
  • You will select and qualify optical elements for a laser beam delivery system.
  • Assembling, aligning, and testing multi-element lens cells.
  • Setting up clean rooms and implementing related safety and good work practice protocols
  • Managing and leading the project execution, documentation and reporting of project progress and results, and communicating milestones and deliverables to the leadership and stakeholders
  • You will participate in and provide first-hand feedback on optical system design and integration.
  • Working with a cross-disciplinary internal team to further improve our AM system design and performance.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Optics or Physics with 2+ years of relevant work experience, or Master of Science degree with 1+ years of relevant work experience, or new college graduate with a PhD degree
  • Experience with designing complex high precision optical systems using Zemax (or similar software)
  • Must be a current US Citizen or US Resident/Green Card Holder
Preferred Skills
  • Hands on experience with cleaving and splicing of fibers for high power, single-mode, and multi-mode fiber lasers
  • Experience in specification and implementation of free space fiber couplers
  • Experience in multi-element lens cell assembly and alignment
  • Experience in laser beam metrology and diagnostics such as Profilometry, M2 measurement, power, etc., and associated software
  • Experience in laser damage testing of optical surfaces
  • Familiar with clean room protocols and setting-up and operating an optical lab
  • Excellent experimental report writing skills
  • Team player with excellent communication skills
  • Additive Manufacturing (AM) industry experience
  • Experience working in a fast-paced startup company environment
